Football may be behind closed doors at professional level but non-league from step 3 downwards is still open for spectators, so if you can’t watch Leicester City, watch some of the Leicestershire non-leaguers and what a better place to start than with Hinckley AFC.

One of two clubs rising from the ashes of Hinckley United, Hinckley AFC are now back in the borough albeit playing at Barwell but certainly better than playing in exile at Heather St Johns and last season Ibstock.

Hinckley AFC play in the Midland Football League Division 1 but probably get more support than the landlords Barwell FC. Tonight, we had 208 under the Kirkby Road lights and it was a very watchable game.

Hinckley should have won; they were 2-0 up at half time thanks to a fierce shot from an acute angle from young Drew Kear and a Luke Richards penalty. The home side were playing some good football and created several other chances, the Athletic keeper also having to be at his best.

In the second half Cadbury no doubt given a dressing down reappeared with two subs on and started with more intensity. 2-0 can be a dangerous score line and so it was to prove.

Daniel Morris headed home a corner making it 2-1, it was now very much game on. Both sides were creating opportunities, but the better chances were falling Hinckley’s way, but were not converted. This was to prove costly as the visitors from Birmingham grabbed an equaliser with the last kick of the game, Emile Beckford twisting and turning in the penalty area and firing the ball home.

Big disappointment for Hinckley AFC as they really should have put the game to bed but there were plenty of positives, some decent football at times and now the team with the towns name is almost back in town. Not quite but rocking up in Barwell will encourage the old support to maybe take a look.
